What you can learn from my unremarkable college journey

Daily writing prompt
What colleges have you attended?

Absolutely nothing but, by the way, I graduated from Houston Community College and the University of Houston.

As a queer, nonbinary Filipino person, I also attended classes at Liberty University and it was the most regrettable thing that I ever did in my entire collegiate career.

Not only do they function like a for-profit institution, but they are vehemently against the very existence of people like myself and attending a class there felt like the greatest sin against my community.

But it took the racial awakening of 2020 for me to realize that, no, I don’t want to attend an institution that values the flag more than the Black community…

or values the Bible more than me.

But yep, this is my answer to the question of “What colleges have you attended?”

Maybe my next prompt should be why you shouldn’t aim for a 4.0 GPA because I did and, ironically, received NONE of the noted social benefits of college as a result.

So, to aspiring students, I would say that finding yourself during these formative years is, by far, much more important than anything else. Whether it’s primary, secondary, university, or technical education, the most underscored part of an education is the fact that it isn’t about reaching any level of perfection but, rather, what you can do with what you have learned.

We may be caught up with grades and awards, or maybe just struggling to get by, but neither of those things actually defines you, the person who has the power to utilize whatever you have learned to do the great things in this world that you are capable of doing.
