My most stable friendships are with dogs

What quality do you value most in a friend?

And I admit it.

I love every dog, but especially the ones that I have cared for.

They bring me such joy, and they help me to forget the things that I go through on a regular basis.

Dogs give me hope and a reason to live, as well as a reason to hope.

My late dog, Kiba, was my best friend and gave me endless amounts of joy just by being there. My dog now, Cookie, is always there, sometimes too much, but she’s great nonetheless.

So, for a human friend, someone who’s there, and won’t just abandon me? That’s my only requirement for friendship.

People always have something to say, but how about someone who’s just willing to stay?

I’ve allowed far too many would-be great friendships to falter since they no longer wanted to be there for me, and I reciprocate. Not because friendship is a transaction, but because you can’t expect growth from a dying plant.

This is why my most stable friendships are with dogs.

Beings that I could be myself for, that I don’t have to feel like I need to dress up for, and that I feel comfort with.

Even with the downsides of caring for a dog, the cleanup especially, it’s worth it because of the endorphin rush of seeing my dog.

Dogs will always have my heart and trust for that reason, and I can wait for quality human friendships, albeit with imperfect people.
